Climb

Morning everyone. Looks like the weather is finally starting to get a little better. Snow still covering the ground... but it's not longer single digits (so there's that). Oh well, weather aside we have some stuff to get to.

So in toady's Olympics we see thing from the Luge, Snowboarding, Hockey and Ice Skating in the Winter and Weightlifting, Gymnastics, and even Volleyball in the Summer. Yes, there is many sports to choose to compete in. But, these games have not always been the same. Over the years there has been some odd events that have came and went... some may even be coming back today. This is what we're going to talk about today, the Olympic Sport of Rope Climbing.

Rope Climbing was seen at the Games between 1896 and 1932. There has also been talks of Rope Climbing making a comeback to the Olympics. Throughout the year, the length of the rope has changed. The first time around, it was a whopping 11 meters and has gone to as "low" as 7 meters. Now we practice rope climbs in CrossFit, but these athletes were not allowed to use their legs for their competition.

An interesting note, during the appearance at the Games, in 1904, the event was won by an American by the name of George Eyser. Why is that interesting? Well, George has one wooden leg. Ol' George scaled a 25 foot rope, beginning seated on the floor, in a speedy 7 seconds flat! Today there are unsanctioned competitions around the world in Rope Climbing, especially in Europe. So who know, we could see this make a reappearance at the Olympic Game... I mean, they've already showed up at the CrossFit Games.

So what do you guys think? Do we have any Olympic hopefuls out there? Learning new sports is one of the mantras of CrossFit, and I think rope climbing is an excellent one to try. So hold tight, reach high... and do burpees.
